Two Arrested in Chennai for Links with Indian Mujahideen


Chennai, Nov 28 (IANS): A special intelligence team Monday arrested Mohammed Irshad Khan, said to be associated with Indian Mujahadeen (IM) outfit and involved in some sensational terror cases in the national capital, and took him to New Delhi for questiong, police said.

Abdul Rahman from Bihar, a first year student of computer science at the Bharath Engineering College here, was also arrested for helping Khan and taken to the national capital.

According to police, the intelligence team had been monitoring the movements of Khan and traced him to Selairyur, a suburban area here, where he was staying with a group of students from Bihar.

On Sunday, police stormed the apartment and took him into custody along with five other students for interrogation.

Police said that during interrogation, it was established Khan was a member of the IM and was wanted in connection several cases in New Delhi.

The police formally arrested him and Rahman Monday and took them to New Delhi on a transit warrant from a local court.

The four other students staying with Rahman were let off with a stern warning that they should appear before police whenever needed.

Police are ascertaining the purpose of Khan's stay here though it is said there were plans for a terror strike in Bangalore next month.

According to a release from Chennai City Police Commissioner's Office, preliminary investigations did not reveal any plans of terror strike in the state.

The statement said the city police on a request from Delhi Police helped in tracking and securing one man, a resident of Delhi, and Rahman, a student from Bihar, studying here.

Khan, wanted in cases involving counterfeit notes and forged passports, had come here a couple of days back.

City police also said no weapons were found at the apartment here where the two where arrested.
