Puttur, Oct 15: The sarees supplied by the state government to anganwadi workers and helpers as uniforms have been reported to be of low quality, with threads coming off within 15 days of use.
Each anganwadi worker and helper received four sarees, two each, with instructions to wear them as uniforms for the next year. The sarees were distributed on September 15, and workers were instructed to begin wearing them from October 2. However, workers and helpers have complained that the threads are coming apart within 15 days of use, and black spots have also appeared on the sarees.
The state government supplied sarees directly to 1,37,509 anganwadi workers and helpers across 69,919 Anganwadi centers in Karnataka, with each saree costing the state Rs 400. However, the recipients claim that the sarees are not even worth Rs 100.
Tara J Ballal, president of the Anganwadi Workers and Assistants Association in Dakshina Kannada, stated, "The threads of the sarees given as uniforms are coming off within 15 days. How can they be expected to last for one year? Many anganwadi workers and helpers have raised this issue."
