Mangaluru, Oct 30: With Deepavali around the corner, Mangaluru is abuzz with preparations as families and communities engage in rituals, shopping, and decorations to welcome the Festival of Lights. Traditionally significant for agricultural families, preparations include poojas for agricultural equipment, the revered Balindra pooja, and special offerings to elders and Daivas. This ritual honours the harvest and seeks blessings for prosperity.

As the festival emphasizes cleanliness and illumination, mud lamps and decorative items have seen a surge in demand. Local markets and roadside vendors have stocked an array of clay lamps, which remain a popular choice due to their traditional appeal. Crystal lamps are also available, although slightly pricier than clay alternatives. In the city’s vibrant markets, pushcarts filled with mud lamps and crystal options line the roads, drawing steady crowds of shoppers.

Additionally, the famous Goodudeepa—decorative lanterns—are attracting customers with an impressive variety of designs and materials. From colourful cloth designs to plastic and paper Goodudeepa, local shops are seeing an influx of buyers as the city lights up with these traditional decorations. With Naraka Chaturdashi approaching, the sale of these items is expected to peak, especially over the weekend as last-minute shoppers complete their festive purchases.

As Mangaluru readies itself for Deepavali, homes and communities reflect the spirit of the festival, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. The festive atmosphere of unity and joy continues to grow, promising a memorable Deepavali celebration for all.
