Bantwal, Nov 17: In a significant development for B C Road, the newly completed third bridge over the Netravati River was opened for traffic on Saturday, November 16, marking a major milestone in the ongoing road expansion project.
The bridge, part of the Rs 14 crore four-lane development between B C Road and Addahole, was tested with a trial run on Friday, before regular traffic commenced smoothly the following day.
The completion of this bridge, built by K N R Constructions, will ease congestion on B C Road and improve connectivity. The bridge is 386 meters long and 13.5 meters wide, with a height of 16 meters above the river. Eleven pillars support the structure, and both embankments are now in place. With two existing bridges operating in opposite directions, the new bridge ensures smoother flow without the risk of vehicles coming head-on.
Third bridge and B C Road’s unique legacy
The newly opened bridge is part of a historic development. B C Road now boasts of three bridges over the Netravati River, a rare distinction for a single town. The first bridge, built during British rule in 1916, was known for its narrow design, causing frequent traffic jams. This was followed by a second, wider bridge built in 2002-03 to accommodate growing traffic.
The latest bridge, inaugurated on November 15, 2024, is specifically for vehicles heading towards B C Road, while the older ones will serve vehicles traveling out of the area.
Ongoing road work and caution
While the third bridge has been completed, drivers are advised to be cautious as some nearby roadwork is still underway. The stretch leading to the old bridge has been blocked and turned into a divider to improve safety.
Authorities are urging motorists to adhere to speed limits, especially near Sagar Hall, where the road narrows.
Melkar-Panemangalore Flyover and traffic relief
Meanwhile, the Melkar-Panemangalore flyover is now operational, providing another crucial link in the region’s road network.
The flyover’s opening is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, with the Melkar flyover fully opening to the public by the end of this month. However, work on widening the road between Melkar and Kalladka continues, and drivers are advised to remain cautious as this stretch is still under construction.
Maintenance of older bridges
Despite the new bridge’s completion, there’s concern over the deteriorating condition of the old bridges. The asphalt on the older bridge next to the new one has worn away, and authorities must prioritise its repair to ensure the safety and efficiency of traffic flow.
