Wakf controversy escalates in Karnataka, strains communal ties and harmony

Dharwad, Nov 17: The ongoing Wakf controversy in Karnataka is intensifying, creating rifts between communities and sparking violent clashes. Recently, pro-Hindu organizations staged a protest in Kalaburagi, where tensions boiled over and members from both communities engaged in physical confrontations. The situation in the city is now highly charged, with authorities struggling to maintain control.

The controversy stems from the Wakf Board’s efforts to appoint Adalats (tribunals) to identify and manage its properties. This move has sparked protests, with both sides trading abuses. In Kalaburagi, tensions have escalated to the point where some individuals are resorting to personal attacks, threatening the fragile communal harmony that once prevailed in rural areas.

A senior police officer stated, “Protesters are chanting slogans claiming that the property belongs to India and not anyone’s father. In response, the other community is arguing that it’s not their fathers’ property either. The police are intervening to bring the situation under control.”

He added, “We are taking all necessary steps to manage the situation. Those violating the law are being arrested, and meetings will be held with both communities to ensure law and order are maintained.”

Amid these developments, a prominent Hindu activist commented, “It’s time to teach a lesson to corrupt political leaders and their supporters. Some politicians are trying to divide the country on the basis of religion, caste, and color. If the public doesn’t understand their motives and rise against them, India could witness a level of violence never seen before. The Wakf issue could become one of the biggest challenges in the country. Those who champion the cause of minorities in India often overlook the fact that Hindus are considered minorities in many other countries.”

As the situation continues to unfold, authorities are under pressure to prevent further violence and restore communal harmony.
