Mangaluru: Changing weather sparks fear of epidemic diseases

Mangaluru, Dec 11: The recent fluctuation in weather patterns, with intermittent rain, heat, and cold, has raised concerns about the spread of infectious diseases in the region. Viral fever cases have seen a surge, especially among children, leading to an increase in hospital visits, according to health experts.

Parents are advised to keep children showing symptoms of fever or other infectious diseases at home to prevent the spread in schools. The ongoing winter season has also contributed to skin-related issues such as rashes, itching, and cracks, necessitating extra skin care.

A rise in cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) has been observed among children aged 5 to 10 years. As a contagious disease, it poses a significant risk of spreading in schools.

Meanwhile, sporadic rains in the district have renewed fears of dengue. Although heavy rainfall previously flushed out stagnant water, the current conditions favour the breeding of dengue-causing mosquitoes in standing clean water.

Health officials have urged the public to take preventive measures, including washing hands and feet thoroughly, wearing masks when stepping outside, drinking boiled and cooled water, consuming immunity-boosting foods, consulting a doctor if symptoms like fever appear, avoiding self-medication, and keeping children with infectious diseases away from school. Dr H R Thimmayya, district health officer, stressed the need for vigilance, stating, "The changing weather increases the risk of certain diseases. The public must take preventive measures and consult doctors instead of relying on over-the-counter medicines."

The health department continues its awareness initiatives to educate the public about maintaining health and preventing the spread of diseases.
