Mangaluru, Dec 28: The Dakshina Kannada district administration is considering keeping the beaches open at night for tourists and the public.

DC Mullai Mugilan stated, “Preparations are being made on the beaches, including the deployment of lifeguards and installation of street lights to ensure the safety of tourists. This initiative will be implemented first at Panambur Beach. Necessary works are still underway. Efforts for Blue Flag beach recognition are ongoing at Tannirubhavi Beach. The district administration is considering keeping the beaches open until 1 am.”

City police commissioner Anupam Agarwal remarked, “Night time beach access will only be allowed once the necessary infrastructure and safety measures for tourists are in place. However, extending the hours for pubs, bars, and restaurants until 1 am will not be implemented at this time.”

I feel this is a welcome move. Movement of people should not be restricted to any place, day or night. It is the right of the people. But again we collect so much tax, so it directly becomes the responsibility of the administration to put safety measures in place. We are no more a 9 to 6 city. We are becoming cosmopolitan and there are so many companies working night shifts that also contributes to the economy and its workers paying taxes. They deserve the same amenities as others. As I said it is the city administration who should not stop people from moving freely. They need to enable free movement and put safety measures in place.
