Mangaluru: Bed bug bite on private bus – Consumer Forum orders Rs 1.29 lac compensation

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 31: The consumer forum of Dakshina Kannada district has ordered a private bus operator and the Red Bus app to compensate a passenger with Rs 1.29 lac after she suffered a bed bug bite while traveling from Mangaluru to Bengaluru.

The incident occurred on a Sea Bird bus, where Deepika Suvarna, who had booked her ticket through the Red Bus app, endured bed bug bites during her journey. She was traveling with her husband, Shobharaj Pavoor, to participate in the renowned TV show Raja Rani. The discomfort caused by the bites hampered her preparation for the show, leading to deductions in her payment for the reality show.

Deepika filed a complaint against Sea Bird Travels and Red Bus with the consumer court. After conducting an inquiry, the court ordered the bus operator and the app to jointly pay Rs 1 lac as compensation, Rs 18,650 as a fine, Rs 850 as a ticket refund, and Rs 10,000 towards legal expenses.

Advocate Chidananda Kedilaya represented the complainant in the case.

How can the Court prove that the bug belongs to the Bus Company or which passenger left it in the bus. First check this lady's household things. compensation claim is too huge for the minor beg bite!

Does this hold good if public transport like KSRTC etc. don't arrive on time or if services are truncated due to their inability holding the people at ransom without prior information? As this falls under the purview of essential services, can these be held accountable? This has to end somewhere and at some point-in-time.

Congratulations! Mrs Deepika, Many people shy away from going to consumer court due to a lack of time or awareness. My wife, aged 70, was traveling from Mangalore to Bangalore and was asked to alight at a different stop because the bus wanted to take a deviation. My daughter was waiting at the designated stop, which was the booking destination. We were agonized for half an hour until we managed to trace my wife. I now regret not approaching the consumer court.

Sir,, you should try to approach the consumer court with a request to condone the delay to set a precedent by holding wrongdoers accountable. When justice is pursued not for personal gain but to uphold ethics and fairness, it sends a strong message to society. Such actions can help in fostering accountability and ensuring that similar things are not repeated.
