Mangaluru/Udupi: New Year 2025 welcomed with prayers, gratitude by faithful

Udupi, Dec 31: The Christian community in Mangaluru and Udupi district welcomed the New Year 2025 with prayers and thanksgiving. On Tuesday, December 31 evening, faithful gathered in churches to express gratitude to God for His protection and blessings throughout 2024 and to pray for peace, happiness, and prosperity in the year ahead.

While Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha led the Holy Mass in Mangaluru, Bishop of the Udupi diocese Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo led the same at Milagres Cathedral in Kallianpur on Tuesday night. In his address, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo urged the community to follow the divine path, pray for world peace, and contribute to efforts for global harmony.

Before the Holy Mass, a special adoration ceremony was held, offering thanks for God’s blessings throughout the past year. Prayers were dedicated to global peace and prosperity in 2025.

The event at Milagres Cathedral was attended by monsignor Ferdinand Gonsalves, vicar general of the Udupi diocese, along with assistant priests Fr Pradeep Cardoza and Dr Jensil Alva, and other guest clergy members.

Similar celebrations took place in other major churches across the district. Dr Leslie D’Souza led the service at the Shrine of Our Lady of Health in Shirva, Fr Charles Menezes at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Udupi, Fr Paul Rego at Holy Rosary Church in Kundapur, Fr Alban D’Souza at St Lawrence Basilica in Attur, Karkala, and Fr Dennis D’Sa at St Anne’s Church in Thottam.

Youth groups marked the New Year celebrations with cultural programs and cake distribution in the churches. After the Holy Mass, the congregation exchanged greetings, fostering a spirit of unity and goodwill.
