Washington, Jan 8: US President-elect Donald Trump has ignited controversy by sharing a map on social media that falsely depicted Canada as part of the United States. This provocative move comes after his earlier suggestion of using "economic force" to annex Canada—a statement that was swiftly condemned by outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Addressing reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump dismissed speculation about using military force to annex Canada. "No," he said, before reiterating his belief that Canada should join the US as its 51st state. Over recent weeks, Trump has argued for removing the "artificially drawn line" between the two nations, suggesting it would strengthen both countries, particularly in terms of national security.
"Canada and the United States, that would really be something," Trump said. "You get rid of that artificially drawn line and take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security. Don't forget, we basically protect Canada."
The President-elect also criticized what he claimed was the financial burden of defending Canada. "I love the Canadian people—they’re great. But we’re spending hundreds of billions a year to protect it," Trump said. He further argued that the US should minimize reliance on Canadian trade, including its exports of cars and lumber.
In a swift and sharp response, Trudeau, who had resigned the previous day, took to social media platform X to reject Trump’s assertions. "There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States," he posted.
Trudeau underscored the mutual benefits of the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries. "Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other's biggest trading and security partner," he noted, emphasizing the interdependence that has defined US-Canada relations for decades.
The remarks from both leaders have added fresh tension to an already contentious topic, highlighting the complexities of the relationship between the neighboring nations.
