Mangaluru, Jan 10: The organs of a brain-dead woman from Shivamogga were retrieved at the Wenlock Hospital in the city on Friday January 10.
The woman’s eyes were donated to KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, while her liver was transported to Mysuru under zero-traffic arrangements.
Rekha (41), a resident of Ragigudde in Shivamogga district, fell critically ill while performing household chores. She was initially admitted to a hospital in Shivamogga and later shifted to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, on January 6 for advanced treatment. Upon declaring her brain-dead, Wenlock doctors informed her family about the condition and encouraged them to consider organ donation.
This marks the first organ donation in the 176-year history of Wenlock Hospital. Dr Shivaprakash, the hospital's superintendent, stated that thorough tests were conducted to confirm brain death before proceeding with organ retrieval.
