Saudi Arabia mandates pre-verification of qualifications for Indian work visa applicants

New Delhi, Jan 13: Indians planning to apply for work visas to Saudi Arabia will now be required to undergo pre-verification of their professional and educational qualifications. Saudi Arabia has issued a circular mandating pre-verification for all job visa applicants starting January 14, according to a report by The New Indian Express.

Currently, over 2.4 million Indian workers reside in Saudi Arabia, making them the second-largest expatriate group after Bangladeshis. Indian workers, including women, play a crucial role in Saudi Arabia's job market and contribute significantly to remittances flowing into India.

This regulation was first proposed six months ago. As part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiative and its efforts to increase employment opportunities for its citizens, the country has introduced these changes, the report noted.

Employers and HR departments have been instructed to verify the certificates and information provided by migrant workers. This measure is expected to streamline the recruitment process and enhance the quality of the workforce in the country.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia has updated the rules for expatriates concerning exit and re-entry visa extensions and the renewal of Iqamas (residency permits). The General Directorate of Passports in Saudi Arabia announced on X (formerly Twitter) that expatriates, including those currently outside the kingdom, can now renew their Iqamas.

The employer should be always be allowed to verify the credentials of his prospective employees, but will the Employee also be able to ensure and verify the terms of the contract i.e. salary, job description, hours of work? etc. etc. Can it be expected to be treated humanely and with respect? The first thing that happens to all workers upon landing is their passports get confiscated
