Kadaba, Jan 17: In a swift operation, Kadaba police arrested Sinu Kurian, a resident of Karmai, on Thursday for allegedly stealing cash and gold ornaments in broad daylight from a house near Mardala. The arrest was made within five days of the theft.
The incident occurred on Sunday when Kuriyakose, also known as James, an auto-rickshaw driver from 102 Nekkiladi village, had locked his house and gone to church with his wife and son. Upon returning, they discovered their home had been burgled.
Police investigations revealed that a young man from a neighbouring house, identified as Sinu Kurian, was the suspect. Acting on crucial leads, the police apprehended him on Wednesday night. During questioning, Kurian confessed to breaking the lock of the house with a pickaxe he carried on his bike and committing the theft. He admitted financial distress due to debt was the reason behind the crime.
The police recovered the stolen gold ornaments and some cash from Kurian’s possession. He was presented before the court and placed in judicial custody for 14 days.
Reports suggest that after committing the crime, Kurian became mentally disturbed and attempted suicide by heading towards a railway track, fearing police arrest. However, he was subsequently taken into custody before he could harm himself.
