Islamabad, Jan 17: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was acquitted on Friday in the 190 million pounds Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. The case involved Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, who co-founded the Al-Qadir Trust in 2018 during Khan’s tenure as prime minister.
The trust is a non-governmental welfare organisation aimed at promoting spirituality and Islamic teachings. It operates a university located outside Islamabad, inspired by Bushra Bibi, a reputed spiritual healer whom Khan has described as his spiritual guide. The couple serves as the sole trustees of the organisation, according to Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
Allegations of Corruption
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah alleged that the trust was a cover for Khan to accept land as a bribe from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain. Malik Riaz, one of Pakistan’s richest and most powerful businessmen, is accused of donating nearly 60 acres of land worth 7 billion Pakistani rupees ($24.7 million) to the trust.
In addition, the trust holds a large plot of land near Khan’s residence in Islamabad. Despite its assets, minimal development has been observed at the university’s official site in Punjab’s Jhelum district.
Legal Proceedings
The anti-graft agency had previously summoned Malik Riaz to answer questions regarding the land donation. However, the court acquitted Khan and Bushra Bibi of any wrongdoing in the case, dismissing the charges.
The acquittal marks a significant legal victory for Imran Khan, who has faced multiple allegations since leaving office.
