Mangaluru, Jan 21: Aboobakar, a former trustee of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) and resident of Surathkal, Krishnapura, has been elected as the national president of the INTUC’s Port and Dock Workers Federation.

He arrived in Mangaluru via Mangaluru International Airport, where he was warmly received by the residents of Surathkal and Krishnapura. Aboobakar’s election as the national president was confirmed during a special general meeting held recently in Mumbai, where he was chosen unopposed.

Aboobakar succeeds Odisha’s former Member of Parliament, Samantaray, who had held the position for over four decades until his untimely demise, which left the post vacant.

Speaking about his plans, Aboobakar expressed his commitment to being a voice for the working class at both district and national levels. He emphasized his dedication to addressing the challenges faced by workers in Dakshina Kannada and ensuring fair employment opportunities for the local population.

Highlighting the need for equitable employment, Aboobakar mentioned that many industries and companies in the district currently hire a significant number of workers from outside the state. He assured that the issue would be prioritized in the upcoming core committee meetings, aiming to secure a fair share of jobs for the district’s residents.

Aboobakar was accompanied by his family, friends, and well-wishers during the event. His leadership promises a new chapter in the representation and advocacy of workers’ rights in the region.

Rakesh Malli, working president of INTUC, Karnataka, said, “I am delighted to announce that Aboobakar, former trustee of the New Mangalore Port Authority, has been unanimously elected as the National President of Indian National Port & Dock Workers Federation (INTUC) at the Special General Body meeting held in Mumbai on January 19.

“Representatives from affiliated unions of INTUC across all major ports in India participated in the meeting and wholeheartedly supported Aboobakar's election. This is a momentous achievement and a well-deserved recognition of Aboobakar's unwavering commitment and selfless service to the working class.

“We extend our warmest congratulations to Aboobakar on his election and wish him every success in his new role,” he said.
