Sullia, Jan 27: The carcass of a wild elephant was discovered on Sunday near Erkalpadi in Mandekolu village, located in the reserve forest area on the Karnataka-Kerala border in Sullia taluk. Local residents who came across the deceased elephant informed the forest department.

It is suspected that the elephant died due to severe blood loss following a fight with another male elephant. Signs of injuries and bleeding wounds were observed on the carcass. Officials believe the conflict may have occurred in a different area, with the injured elephant succumbing to its wounds after moving to the current location.

Sulya ACF Praveen Kumar Shetty, range forest officer Manjunath N, and other officials, along with the forest department staff, visited the site to inspect the situation.

Dr Nithin Prabhu, a veterinary officer from Sullia, arrived late in the evening and conducted a preliminary examination. Due to nightfall, the post-mortem and related procedures will be carried out on Monday, January 27, according to forest officer Manjunath.
