Mangaluru, Jan 31: Mount Carmel Central School, observed Martyrs' Day/Peace Day for India on January 30 with a deeply moving tribute to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom.
The occasion also marked the remembrance of Mahatma Gandhiji's assassination on this day in 1948. Organised by the students of grade V A and B, the staff and students reflected on the courage, resilience and selflessness of Gandhiji and the martyrs who shaped the nation’s history.
The programme commenced with a solemn prayer led by students, invoking peace and strength. The chief guest Sophia D’Souza, PTEC member and other dignitaries then honoured Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy by adorning his portrait with garland and flowers.
Adding vibrancy to the solemn occasion, a captivating welcome dance enthralled the audience, setting the tone for the programme. Simona Nicole D’Sa and Adith Rai followed with a warm welcome address, preparing the attendees for a reflective and meaningful observance.
The students further emphasised the significance of Martyrs’ Day, paying homage to the heroes who selflessly dedicated their lives to the nation's freedom. The heart of the programme was a compelling skit that paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, highlighting his principles of peace, simplicity and non-violence.
The performance deeply moved the audience, reinforcing the importance of living a life rooted in compassion and respect. This was followed by a stirring dance performance and a beautiful song segment, where the school’s talented singers uplifted everyone’s spirits.
Chief guest Sophia D’Souza, an esteemed member of the school’s parent-teacher executive committee began her address by congratulating the students of grade V A and B and their mentors for organizing a meaningful programme. Using a powerful analogy contrasting peace and noise, she underscored the importance of inner tranquillity and external chaos. She encouraged students to cultivate peace within themselves, speak up against injustice, and embrace Mother Teresa’s wisdom: “Peace begins with a smile”.
Vice-Principal Sr Teena congratulated the students for their dedication and efforts in organising a thought-provoking programme. She highlighted the importance of remembering the martyrs' sacrifices and how their legacy inspires to live in peace and unity. She concluded by reminding everyone that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a significant impact.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Slokh Karkera, who expressed gratitude to the chief guest, teachers, mentors and the audience for their support and presence. Ishaan Kakunje, Dimple Jain, Daniel Joseph and Avani Madhusudhan seamlessly hosted the event.
The whole school observed a minute's silence to honour Gandhiji's sacrifice and his enduring legacy of peace and non-violence.
