Goa police to implement SOPs to prevent custody escapes after Siddique’s fleeing incident

Panaji, Feb 3: In response to the recent escape of notorious criminal Suleman Mohammed Khan, alias Siddique, from police custody, the Goa police are framing new standard operating procedures (SOPs) to tighten security and prevent similar incidents. The decision follows a detailed inquiry conducted by economic offences cell SP Arshi Aadil into Siddique's escape from the crime branch lockup.

A senior police officer revealed that the SOPs will clearly define the responsibilities of the guard on duty and the in-charge of the police custody. Specific guidelines will be introduced to ensure guards remain professional and avoid any undue familiarity with the accused. In cases where the guard has a prior acquaintance with the accused, he will be required to inform the in-charge and request to be relieved from duty to prevent any conflict of interest.

In the aftermath of the escape, six police personnel have faced disciplinary action. Indian reserve police battalion constable Amit Naik, who aided Siddique’s escape by offering to help him flee for a bribe of Rs 3 cr, was dismissed from service. Head constable Sarvesh Kandolkar, who was the guard in charge, has been suspended. Additionally, two police inspectors and two constables have been penalized for their involvement in the escape.

Siddique, a resident of Tivim, Goa, and a native of Shivamogga, Karnataka, was arrested on November 12 after evading capture for over four years. He had multiple criminal cases across the country, including land grab cases under investigation by Goa's Special Investigation Team (SIT). After his escape on December 13, he was apprehended in Kerala on December 23.
