Mangaluru Feb 4: CFAL (Centre for Advanced Learning) and ELC (Early Learning Centre) are delighted to host Dr Ambat Vijayakumar, an eminent Mathematician and academician, for two exclusive sessions on Mathematics and career opportunities in Mathematics.

Dr Vijayakumar, who served as a faculty member at REC Calicut (1986-88) and CUSAT (1988-2018), is currently an Emeritus Professor at CUSAT.

Schedule of Events:

CFAL Campus – 11:00 am

Dr Vijayakumar will engage students in an insightful session titled “Opportunities with a Math degree and recent careers in Mathematics.” This talk aims to shed light on the vast career possibilities available to Mathematics graduates, from academia and research to industry and emerging fields like data science, cryptography, and artificial intelligence.

ELC Campus – 4:00 pm

The second session, tailored for Mathematics teachers and foundation students (grades 7-10), will explore “Careers in Math.” This talk will provide an early roadmap for students passionate about Mathematics and help educators guide them toward promising career paths.

Dr Vijayakumar’s extensive experience and research background make him a valuable resource for aspiring mathematicians and educators alike. These sessions are a must-attend for students, teachers, and anyone interested in understanding the impact of mathematics in today’s evolving world.

About Dr Ambat Vijayakumar

Dr Ambat Vijayakumar, a distinguished Mathematician and academician, has been appointed president of the Academy of Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications (ADMA) for the term 2024–2026. With a career spanning over four decades, Dr Vijayakumar has made significant contributions to graph theory, Mathematics popularisation, and the history of Mathematics. He holds an MSc and PhD from CUSAT (1980, 1986) and has served as a faculty member at REC Calicut (1986–1988) and CUSAT (1988–2018). Currently, he continues his academic endeavors as an Emeritus Professor at CUSAT.

His excellence in Mathematics education and research has been recognised globally. He is a fellow of the Institute of Combinatorics and Applications, Canada (1999) and has been honoured with the Broad Outlook Learner Teacher Award by Air India (2008). As the regional coordinator of the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (1990-2017), he has guided numerous aspiring students. He has also contributed as a mentor in the INSPIRE programme of DST (GOI).

Dr Vijayakumar has authored over 70 articles in Malayalam and English, making complex Mathematical concepts accessible to students. His contributions to Mathematical literature include serving as the technical consultant for the Malayalam translation of the renowned book The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan (2013).

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr Vijayakumar has had the honour of interacting with Dr A P J Abdul Kalam multiple times, further enriching his journey as an educator and thought leader.
