Bantwal, Feb 8: They say happiness has many companions, but sorrow often leaves one alone. The current situation of Padma Shri awardee Amai Mahalinga Naik is no different.

Once celebrated across Karnataka when he was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri for his achievements, today, Naik is facing immense hardship as he struggles to afford his wife's medical expenses.

A progressive farmer honoured with one of India's highest civilian awards, Naik is now battling old age and declining physical strength. His wife recently suffered a severe neurological condition, adding to his woes. She initially received treatment for a week at a hospital in Puttur, where doctors later recommended further advanced care in Mangaluru.

Following their advice, she was admitted to First Neuro Hospital in Kannur, Kodakkal. Naik has already spent Rs 2.65 lac on her treatment by borrowing from acquaintances and using his savings. However, he now needs an additional Rs 2.5 lac for ongoing medical expenses. With no funds left, he finds himself in dire straits.

The same man who once carved water channels through hills by hand is now struggling to pay hospital bills. It is time for generous donors to come forward and support him in his hour of need. The people of Tulunadu must unite to help this Padma Shri awardee in his distress.
