Bantwal, Feb 12: Padma Shri awardee and progressive farmer Amai Mahalinga Naik's wife, who had undergone surgery for a nerve-related ailment in the head, has recovered and was discharged from the hospital on Monday.

Facing financial difficulties in covering medical expenses, Mahalinga Naik received overwhelming support from generous donors, raising a total of Rs 5.30 lac for the treatment.

A week ago, his wife was admitted to a private hospital in Puttur due to nerve complications. Within two days, she was shifted to a hospital in Adyar, on the outskirts of Mangaluru, for further treatment. Initially, Mahalinga Naik personally managed to pay Rs 2.62 lac by borrowing funds. However, as additional financial assistance was required, an appeal for help was made through media reports.

Responding to the call, Mahalinga Naik’s relatives contributed Rs 70,000. The total hospital bill amounted to Rs 5.30 lac, out of which Rs 70,000 was waived upon the request of district health officials. The remaining amount was settled by Mahalinga Naik.

Now recovering at home, his wife continues to require medications and additional expenses. The family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to society for its generous financial support.
