Tragedy at Karnala: man dies, seven injured in bee attack

Daijiworld Media Release - Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, Feb 16: A 44-year-old man lost his life while seven others sustained injuries after a swarm of bees attacked a group of tourists at Karnala Bird Sanctuary on Saturday.

The deceased, Sandeep Purohit, had visited the sanctuary along with his wife, son, and family friends for a trek to Karnala Fort. The incident occurred when the group was suddenly swarmed by bees, leading to chaos and panic.

Forest officials responded to a distress call and reached the spot within half an hour. They found the tourists struggling to escape the sting, while Purohit was unconscious after reportedly falling and injuring his head in an attempt to flee.

Speaking on the incident, senior police inspector Gajanan Ghadge said, “Bees usually do not attack unless provoked. We are investigating what could have triggered the swarm. An accidental death report has been filed.”

Doctors at Panvel sub-district hospital said Purohit was brought dead, though the exact cause of death will be determined after a histopathology examination. "Severe allergic reactions to multiple bee stings can sometimes lead to cardiac arrest. Purohit also had minor abrasions on his forehead. The final report is awaited," said Superintendent Dr. Ashok Gite.

Among the injured were Purohit’s wife and son. In total, ten people sustained bee stings in the tragic incident.
