Mangaluru, Feb 24: A video showing parcels containing mobile phones, cigarettes, and other items being thrown into the district prison in broad daylight on Sunday has gone viral. A case has been registered at Barke police station in connection with the incident.

It is reported that the incident took place in the presence of former mayor Kavitha Sanil. Around 2.30 pm on February 23, while she was traveling by car on Jail Road, she reportedly saw two individuals on a scooter throwing parcels into the prison premises.

The incident was captured on the dashcam of Kavitha Sanil’s car, clearly showing the two individuals on the scooter throwing the parcels. She also noted that the scooter did not have a number plate.

Prison authorities stated that upon inspection, the thrown parcel was found to contain cigarette packets, a mobile phone, tea powder, and soybeans. A case has been registered at Barke police station.

Further investigation revealed that the parcel was picked up by an undertrial prisoner named Rafeeq from the quarantine section, cell number 9. Upon checking, authorities recovered one mobile phone, three cigarette packs, one lighter, a plastic packet of soybeans, and a plastic packet of tea powder from Rafeeq. A case has been registered in this regard at Barke police station, prison authorities confirmed.

How is it so easy to throw things inside the district prison housing murder undertrials? If such a case is possible then small arms n bombs can also be thrown inside. There must be an audit on the general safety of the prison as a whole.
