Punjab, Feb 26: In a significant crackdown on illegal immigration networks, Punjab Police registered 24 FIRs and conducted 1,274 raids on immigration firms and travel agencies across the state. The intensified operation led to the arrest of seven travel agents involved in fraudulent activities.
The large-scale enforcement action was carried out on Monday under the supervision of Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla, following directives from DGP Gaurav Yadav. The initiative aligns with the vision of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to protect youth from falling prey to unscrupulous agents promising illegal entry into foreign countries.

The simultaneous raids were conducted across all 28 police districts between 11:00 AM and late evening. The operation follows the recent deportation of Indian nationals from the United States, including over 100 individuals from Punjab, raising concerns over fraudulent immigration practices.
According to ADGP Shukla, over 12 FIRs have already been lodged against travel agents operating in Punjab, Haryana, and New Delhi based on complaints from deportees. All Commissioners of Police (CPs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) were instructed to take stringent action against violators of the Punjab Travel Professionals Regulation Act, 2012.
Under the 2012 Act, travel agents must obtain a valid licence from the Deputy Commissioner's office, which remains effective for five years and requires renewal. Registered agents are mandated to display their licences prominently, maintain client records, and notify authorities before advertising services or conducting seminars. Strict penalties, including licence suspension and legal action, await those engaging in unauthorized activities such as human smuggling or illegal emigration assistance.
In light of recent incidents, the DGP has constituted a special four-member investigation team (SIT) led by ADGP (NRI Affairs) Praveen Sinha. This team will scrutinize complaints from deportees and initiate legal proceedings against fraudulent operators.
ADGP Shukla has urged the public to remain cautious while dealing with travel agencies. “Individuals must verify the credentials of travel agents before making payments or sharing personal documents. Engage only with agencies that hold a valid licence under the Punjab Travel Professionals’ Regulation Act, 2012,” he advised.
The crackdown underscores Punjab Police’s commitment to curbing illegal immigration and safeguarding the interests of aspiring migrants.
