Rachin Ravindra eager to play against India despite dead rubber clash

Dubai, Feb 26: New Zealand’s dynamic batsman Rachin Ravindra has expressed his eagerness to feature in the upcoming dead rubber clash against India at the ICC Champions Trophy, despite the Black Caps already securing a spot in the semi-finals.

Ravindra, who missed New Zealand’s opening match against Pakistan due to a head injury, made a remarkable comeback by smashing a century (112) against Bangladesh. With selectors considering resting key players for the final group-stage encounter, the 25-year-old left-hander is hopeful of retaining his place in the playing XI.

“Conversations haven’t really been had around that. But in a tournament like this, you want to play as many games as you can,” Ravindra told reporters on Wednesday.

“The nature of my injury meant I had to miss some games, so I’ll do whatever the team wants, but I’d be keen to get out there and hopefully do my thing.”

Ravindra’s tournament preparation was disrupted after he was struck on the head in a fielding mishap, forcing him to undergo concussion protocols. On his return, he batted at number four, replacing all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, who was ruled out due to illness.

Providing an update on Mitchell’s condition, Ravindra stated that he was “definitely progressing well” and that the team welcomed a couple of rest days before the India fixture.

Despite the match being a dead rubber, Ravindra emphasized that the team remains motivated to compete at the highest level.

“I guess you don’t really want to take games for granted ever,” he said.

“I think we can treat it like a game in an international tournament. There’s still a lot to play for, including securing the top spot in the semi-finals.”
