Kochi, Feb 27: Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Kerala legislator P Raju passed away at a private hospital here on Thursday. He was 73.
According to party sources, Raju had been unwell for some time. His mortal remains are currently kept at the hospital, and the funeral arrangements will be announced later.
A stalwart in Kerala’s political landscape, Raju was a prominent member of the CPI’s state council and served as the Ernakulam district secretary for several years. His contributions to the party and the communist movement in the state were significant.
Born on July 18, 1951, Raju was deeply influenced by his father, N Sivan Pillai, who had also served as an MLA. His political journey saw him take on multiple key roles, including serving as the MLA for the North Paravur constituency from 1991 to 1996. His legislative contributions were further highlighted during his tenure as Chairman of the Kerala Assembly Committee on Estimates from 1998 to 2001.
Apart from his legislative work, Raju was actively involved in various organizations. He served as the president of the AIYF Ernakulam district committee, was a member of the CUSAT Senate, and held the position of vice-president of the AITUC Kerala State Council.
He is survived by his wife, B Lathika Kumari, and their daughter. His demise marks the end of a significant chapter in Kerala’s political history, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and service.
