Madgaon, Mar 1: Members of the Bajrang Dal staged a protest outside the residence of noted Konkani writer and former legislator Uday Bhembre in Madgaon, Goa, following his recent remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The protestors demanded an apology from Bhembre, alleging that his comments disrespected the revered Maratha king.
The incident occurred after a video surfaced in which Bhembre discussed historical aspects of Shivaji Maharaj's raids on Goa. Bajrang Dal activists accused him of distorting historical facts and hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community. Gathering outside his house, the protestors chanted slogans and insisted that Bhembre retract his statements.

In response, Bhembre addressed the agitators, attempting to clarify his position and asserting that his remarks were taken out of context. Despite his explanations, the protestors remained adamant, demanding a formal apology.
Local law enforcement authorities were present at the scene to ensure that the demonstration remained peaceful and did not escalate into violence. No incidents of vandalism or physical confrontations were reported during the protest.
This event highlights the increasing assertiveness of right-wing groups like the Bajrang Dal in Goa. In recent years, the organization has been actively involved in various campaigns, including protests against perceived distortions of historical figures and objections to certain religious practices. Their growing influence has occasionally led to tensions within the state's diverse communities.
The Bajrang Dal's activities in Goa have drawn attention, especially after incidents such as the removal of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Calangute in July 2023, which led to significant protests by the group. Their involvement in cultural and religious matters continues to spark debates about the role of such organizations in contemporary Goan society.
As of now, Bhembre has not issued a formal apology, and it remains to be seen how this situation will evolve. The incident underscores the delicate balance between freedom of expression and respect for historical and cultural sentiments in the region.
