Mangaluru, Mar 2: As scorching heat continues to affect Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, health authorities have cautioned the public to remain vigilant about water quality. Contaminated water could lead to an increase in illnesses, they warned.
Last year, following intense heat, the district witnessed several food poisoning cases. Both private and government hospitals in Mangaluru and across the coastal region reported incidents. A notable case involved students of a college hostel, where a major food poisoning incident made headlines. According to food experts, the combination of extreme heat and changes in water quality contributed to these issues.

There are many reasons for food poisoning during summer, but contaminated water remains a primary factor. Contaminated water not only causes food poisoning but also serious diseases. Water shortages in Mangaluru city often lead to reliance on tanker water. However, there is a need for reports on the source, quality, and cleanliness of tanker water, which authorities, including the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and the health department, have yet to address.
Dr Thimmaiah, DK district health officer (DHO), mentioned, "Last time, several hostels faced issues due to impure water supply. Hostels were instructed to submit water quality affidavits. While they are working on it, we are planning to discuss water tanker quality with the MCC commissioner."
The public is advised to prioritize safe drinking water and maintain hygiene, especially during the ongoing heatwave.
