Mangaluru, Mar 4: St Agnes School (CBSE), Mangaluru, celebrated National Science Day on February 28, honouring the momentous discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir CV Raman in 1928. This ground breaking achievement not only earned him the Nobel prize in physics in 1930 but also marked a milestone in the world of science. National Science Day serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role of science and technology in shaping society, while inspiring the younger generation to follow in the footsteps of pioneering scientists and embrace the endless possibilities within the realm of scientific exploration.

The event commenced with a reverent prayer service led by grade 7 students, setting a reflective tone for the day. This was followed by an insightful skit on Science and Technology, presented by grade 1, which engaged the audience in a meaningful dialogue about the intersection of science and daily life. A lively action song and dance performance by grade 3 students captivated everyone, illustrating the transformative impact of science on human existence and showcasing the remarkable contributions of scientists throughout history. Ahana eloquently highlighted the significance of the day, while grade 5 students performed an insightful skit emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced diet for overall well-being. The entire event was skilfully compered by Amruth Sequeira, who guided the audience through each segment with ease.

In addition to the cultural performances, a series of enriching activities were organized to further engage the students in the spirit of scientific inquiry. Grade 6 students had the opportunity to visit the microbiology lab at St Agnes College, where they delved into the fascinating world of microorganisms—"Friend or Foe"—and observed hands-on demonstrations of mushroom culture and wine preparation. Grade 1 students explored the functions of the human sense organs and presented an informative session on the different parts of a plant, fostering an appreciation for the intricate workings of nature. Grade 2 students embarked on a biodiversity walk through the school’s medicinal garden, where they were introduced to the myriad of medicinal plants and their valuable uses in traditional and modern medicine.

Grade 4 students took the stage with captivating experiments on liquid density, milk magic, and volcanic eruptions, leaving the audience mesmerized by the wonders of science. The grade 6 students participated in an intellectually stimulating science quiz, testing their knowledge and sparking friendly competition. Meanwhile, grade 7 students conducted simple experiments in class, explaining the underlying principles and fostering a sense of curiosity and collaboration among their peers.

In her address, Sr Meena Fernandes, the vice principal, eloquently highlighted the growing importance of science in our daily lives and underscored the need to raise awareness about the invaluable contributions of Indian scientists, especially Sir CV Raman. She urged students to develop a keen sense of curiosity, to ask insightful questions, and to relentlessly seek answers that could lead to ground breaking discoveries and innovations capable of solving real-world challenges. Her words inspired students to recognize the power of science in transforming not only the country but also the world.

The event culminated in a powerful and collective gesture as students and teachers came together to take the National Science Day Oath, affirming their commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, embracing innovation, and contributing to the greater good of society.
