Brahmavar: Salt water flooding devastates houses, agricultural lands in villages

Daijiworld Media Network - Brahmavar (JD)

Brahmavar, Mar 4: A sudden artificial flood caused by salt water wreaked havoc on Monday morning in Yakshimath under Saligrama town panchayat, as well as in the Sulkudu area of Pandeshwara gram panchayat and Kodi gram panchayat limits. Several houses and vast stretches of agricultural land were submerged, causing severe damage to local farming activities.

More than forty agricultural lands, primarily cultivating urad, gram, and various vegetables, have suffered extensive damage. Farmers are deeply concerned as the frequent artificial flooding of salt water threatens to render their lands barren, jeopardizing their livelihoods. Vegetable farmers, in particular, fear losing their crops entirely due to the intrusion of salt water.

Even before the completion of the construction of the Kindi Dam across the Sita River in Barkuru-Bennekudru, Brahmavar taluk, salt water had already started entering the coconut plantations in the Sulkudu region, damaging approximately 20-25 acres of coconut crops. The present flooding has exacerbated the situation, heightening fears of long-term damage to agricultural lands.

Local farmers are worried about the worsening disaster that may unfold with the completion of the Kindi Dam. Many have urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent further damage and provide relief to affected families.
