Mumbai, Mar 5: Following his suspension from the Maharashtra Assembly for the remainder of the Budget Session, Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi released a video message clarifying his controversial remarks on Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The decision to suspend Azmi came after his comments sparked a political uproar, with rival parties accusing him of insulting the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Azmi, however, maintained that his statement was a reaction to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's comparison of Rahul Gandhi to Aurangzeb, rather than an independent remark. He insisted that his words were based on historical facts and that he had no intention of disrespecting any leader or national figure.

“I’ve just learned that I’ve been suspended from the Assembly for the rest of this session. When I spoke about a historical figure, I did not insult anyone. My comments on Aurangzeb were rooted in history,” he stated in his video address. Interestingly, the SP leader issued his clarification against the backdrop of a portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, a move seen as an attempt to counter allegations of disrespect.
Azmi further expressed his commitment to the functioning of the Assembly, stating that he had even withdrawn his remarks to ensure a smooth session.
“I wanted the Assembly to function without disruption. To ensure that, I was willing to retract my statement. Even after my suspension, I took back my comments in the interest of the House’s progress,” he added.
Azmi also pointed out what he called a "double standard", questioning why individuals like Prashant Koratkar and Rahul Solapurkar, who allegedly made derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, faced no legal action.
“This is unfair. They weren’t even jailed, while I have been suspended. Why are different standards applied?” he asked.
The SP leader also voiced frustration over his inability to raise important issues concerning his constituency, calling the suspension an injustice.
“I had pressing matters to discuss in the Assembly. Despite being unwell, I am determined to pursue legal action against this unfair suspension,” he said.
Azmi’s praise for Aurangzeb led to massive backlash, prompting demands for his removal from the Assembly. Later, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), he reiterated that his remarks were based on historical accounts and had been misinterpreted.
“I never intended to disrespect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj or any national icon. If my words hurt anyone, I regret it. However, I believe this issue is being politically manipulated to derail the Budget Session, which ultimately harms the people of Maharashtra,” he wrote.
