Tel Aviv, Mar 7: In a bold educational reform, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai has announced a phased initiative to eliminate smartphones from schools, with a complete ban set to take effect from September 2025. The move, aimed at fostering better concentration and reducing digital distractions, was unveiled at a school principals’ conference.

The initiative, titled "Gaining Attention," seeks to gradually minimize smartphone usage within school premises, eventually leading to their total removal. Addressing the conference, Mayor Huldai stressed the importance of reclaiming focus in the learning environment.

"We won't let technology control us – we are removing smartphones from schools," he asserted, emphasizing the need to prioritize students' engagement and academic performance.

The decision has sparked discussions among educators, parents, and students, with many viewing it as a necessary step towards improving classroom interaction and cognitive development.

However, some concerns remain regarding implementation and alternative digital solutions for educational purposes.

With the phase-out set to begin soon, Tel Aviv's move could set a precedent for other regions reconsidering the role of technology in education.
