Mangaluru: SJEC celebrates 'Go for Gold-2025' annual athletic meet

Mangaluru, Mar 11: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, hosted its much-anticipated annual athletic meet, 'Go for Gold-2025', at the college grounds on Tuesday, March 11. The event was organised by the Department of Physical Education, Wellness, and the Sports Group.

The chief guest for the occasion was Sonith Mendon, a coach with the Athletic Federation of India, national-level athlete, and fitness consultant. He inaugurated the meet by hoisting the flag, following a vibrant march-past by the students.

After the flag-hoisting ceremony, students who had participated in national-level sports events were handed the burning torch by Mendon, symbolising their achievements. The chief guest then officially declared the meet open.

In his address to the gathering, Sonith Mendon shared his thoughts on the significance of athletics, saying, "Athletics taught me to compete hard, fail, respect opponents, strategize, and execute plans to succeed." He encouraged the students to "run faster, jump higher," and keep the spirit of athletics alive.

Additionally, international-level athlete Daniel Salvadore Concessao was felicitated for his remarkable contributions to sports.

Other dignitaries present at the event included director Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, principal Dr. Rio D’Souza, vice principal Dr Purushottama Chippar, and dean of Student Welfare Dr Ramananda H S. Sports advisors Himani Kishan Raj and physical education director Vaneesha V Rodrigues were also in attendance.

Priya Seema Miranda, chairperson of the Wellness and Sports Group, welcomed the gathering, while Chithranjan M proposed the vote of thanks. Rachana Crasta and Joel D Mello compered the event.
