Mangaluru, Mar 12: Illegal red stone mining has become rampant along the highway at Yedapadav, Moodbidri taluk, where large-scale extraction has been occurring for several months, with the value of the mined stones running into crores. This illegal activity is taking place right in the middle of the highway.
Concerns over mining and official negligence
Several questions are being raised regarding the red stone mining happening along the national highway, with concerns pointing towards negligence from both officials and elected representatives. The mining activity continues unabated both day and night, as evidenced by the frequent lorry tire marks seen along the highway. This raises suspicions about whether the red stones are being transported privately.

In 2022, the road contract for the stretch was awarded to DBL Company, located in Kulshekar – Moodbidri. Now, concerns have arisen over the illegal red stone mining happening in the area, particularly since the national highway passes through this stretch.
Authorities must address illegal mining issue
Authorities must urgently address the issue of illegal red stone mining along the highway. deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan stated that this issue had not been brought to his attention before. "I will look into the matter and verify the permissions. There is a provision that allows rocks found during road construction to be used for the same project, but this is red stone mining, which is not used in NHAI works. I will take up this issue and look into it," he assured.
