Unhygienic conditions exposed in Mapusa market during inspection

Mapusa, Mar 14: A surprise inspection by health officials on Thursday revealed shocking levels of unhygienic and unsanitary conditions in the Mapusa municipal fish, mutton, and chicken market.

Led by Dr Dinesh Parab, health officer of the Urban Health Centre, the inspection was carried out following a local complaint. Officials found that the market lacked a valid health NOC and failed to meet essential hygiene standards. The surrounding area was filthy, with an overall putrid atmosphere, raising serious health concerns.

“We conducted a detailed inspection based on a complaint received from a local resident. A report on the market’s condition will be prepared soon,” Dr Parab stated.

During the inspection, officials discovered that the market did not have mandatory licenses from the Goa State Pollution Control Board, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the health department. The Mapusa municipal council was also criticised for its failure to maintain cleanliness, as the entire market building was found in a neglected state.

Local complainant Atmaram Gadekar, who was present during the inspection, expressed his frustration over the poor hygiene conditions and slammed municipal authorities and councillors for their inaction.

“Despite being elected repeatedly, some councillors have failed to improve and maintain the market. The people of Mapusa deserve better facilities,” Gadekar said.

The health department is expected to submit a report on the inspection findings, and further action may be taken against the lapses observed.
