Two arrested for illegal storage of ration rice in Kaup

Kaup, Mar 15: Two individuals were arrested for illegally procuring and storing rice from the government’s Annabhagya scheme, meant for beneficiaries.

Kaup taluk food inspector M T Leelananda, while on duty, received a tip-off regarding the illegal transportation of ration rice. In the afternoon on Friday, near the Kaup town fair price shop, it was reported that rice was being loaded into a KA 19 D 7955 passenger auto-rickshaw from ration cardholders. Acting on this information, the complainant arrived at the spot at approximately 1:05 PM and found two individuals near the vehicle, Kalandar Shafi (43) from Hejamadi village, Kaup taluk, and Ubaidulla (31) from Sajipa village, Bantwal taluk.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the accused had illegally collected 250 kg of rice, worth approximately Rs 8,500, packed in six sacks. They had allegedly purchased the ration rice from cardholders at Rs 20 per kg with the intention of reselling it at a higher price. The accused confessed that they were transporting the rice to sell to an individual named Pratap from Mudarangady.

A case has been registered at Kaup police station.
