Aizawl, Mar 16: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Saturday credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah for playing a key role in the transfer of Assam Rifles’ land to the state government, stating that Shah’s name will be “engraved in the history of Mizoram.”
Speaking at the official handover ceremony in Aizawl, CM Lalduhoma highlighted the significance of relocating the Assam Rifles complex to Zokhawsang, a long-pending demand that will contribute to Aizawl’s urban development. He also acknowledged the contributions of Assam Rifles director general lt gen Vikas Lakhera, union home secretary Govind Mohan, and intelligence bureau director Tapan Deka in ensuring the smooth transition.

The Chief Minister noted that Mizoram’s mountainous terrain poses unique urban planning challenges, and shifting the paramilitary complex will aid in making Aizawl a more liveable and well-planned city. However, he reaffirmed Mizoram’s continued cooperation with Assam Rifles in maintaining security and stability in the region.
The relocation process was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on October 23, 2024, at Mizoram House, New Delhi. Union home minister Amit Shah had earlier inaugurated the Zokhawsang complex in April 2023.
The demand for relocation dates back to 1988, when the then Mizo National Front (MNF) government, led by former Chief Minister Laldenga, first sought the removal of Assam Rifles following a violent clash that resulted in civilian casualties. While the Union home ministry directed the move in 2019, delays in infrastructure readiness prolonged the process.
With the final handover now completed, the relocation marks a historic shift in Mizoram’s governance and urban development, strengthening ties between the state and the Centre.
