Palakkad, Jul 3: Four persons, including an armed forces personnel, have been arrested for allegedly assaulting police officers during a vehicle inspection carried out under the anti-narcotics campaign Operation Toofan in Kerala's Palakkad district, police said.

The accused have been identified as Jinesh (28), an armed forces personnel who was on leave, and Mannarkkad residents Ranjith (37), Praveen (39) and Aneesh (35).

According to officials at the Hemambika Nagar police station, the incident took place on Thursday night at Pazhampully near Paittamkunnam, where police had set up a vehicle inspection as part of Operation Toofan.

Police said the four men were travelling in a vehicle that was stopped for checking. During the inspection, Jinesh allegedly became agitated, assaulted police personnel and picked up an argument with Sub-Inspector Sudarsana S.

When Civil Police Officers John Xavier and Rajeesh intervened, Jinesh allegedly attacked them as well. The sub-inspector also sustained injuries in the incident.

Police personnel at the scene managed to overpower Jinesh. However, as he was being taken to a police vehicle, the other three accused allegedly intervened and assaulted the officers.

Additional police personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control before taking all four accused into custody.

Police said the accused were heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident.

A case has been registered against them under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to commit culpable homicide. The accused were later produced before a court for remand proceedings.
