Mangaluru, Mar 16: Assistant commissioner Harshvardhan inspected red stone mining at Yedapadav along the highway following concerns over its legality.

Daijiworld had reported on March 12 about illegal red stone mining in the area, raising several questions regarding its impact.

In 2020, the contract for the road construction on this stretch was awarded to DBL Company, located in Kulshekar – Moodbidri. Concerns have now emerged over illegal red stone mining along the national highway.

Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan noted that rocks found during road construction can be used for the same project. However, since red stone is involved, he instructed officials to examine the issue.

Following the deputy commissioner's direction, assistant commissioner Harshvardhan visited the site, took note of key observations, and will submit a detailed report on the red stone mining. He has also sought reports from the panchayat and construction company officials before finalizing his findings.

It is essential to verify whether the construction company has paid royalty before extracting and commercially selling red stone. The mining activity has created 5-6 feet deep pits, posing safety risks, especially with the monsoon approaching. The lack of safety measures further heightens concerns. Additionally, extracting red stone could slow down road work. Authorities believe using an excavator for the construction work, rather than mining red stone separately, would be a more efficient approach.
