New Delhi, Mar 16: Individuals caught using forged passports or visas to enter, stay, or exit India could face imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of up to ?10 lakh if the newly proposed immigration bill is passed by Parliament.

The legislation, introduced by the Union Home Ministry, aims to enhance border security and streamline immigration processes. It mandates that hotels, universities, educational institutions, hospitals, and nursing homes report any relevant information about foreign nationals to facilitate monitoring of overstaying visitors.

Additionally, all international airlines and ships will be required to submit passenger and crew manifests at designated ports or locations in India. This includes providing advance information on all travelers aboard aircraft, vessels, or other modes of international transport.

The bill, tabled in the Lok Sabha on March 11, stipulates that any individual who knowingly uses or provides a forged or fraudulently obtained passport, visa, or other travel document to enter, reside in, or leave India will face a minimum imprisonment of two years, which may extend to seven years, along with a fine ranging from ?1 lakh to ?10 lakh.

Furthermore, any foreign national entering any area of India without a valid passport or required visa, in violation of legal provisions or directives, will be subject to imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to ?5 lakh, or both.

These provisions underscore the government's commitment to strengthening immigration laws and ensuring national security.
