Mangaluru, Mar 16: A man who was in judicial custody in connection with a POCSO case died by suicide inside Mangaluru jail on Sunday, March 16.

The deceased has been identified as Prakash Gopal Moolya (51).

The incident occurred between 4 am and 4.50 am when Prakash allegedly hanged himself from the toilet window inside the jail.

Despite immediate efforts by jail staff to rush him to the hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Prakash Gopal Moolya, a resident of Ladi, Moodbidri, was a daily wage laborer. He had been arrested in connection with a sexual assault case involving a minor girl from his locality, and a case had been registered against him at Moodbidri police station.

Reports also suggest that Prakash, under the influence of alcohol, used to harass his wife at home.

Police suspect that after being remanded to judicial custody on March 11, he became distressed, believing that he would not be granted bail in the POCSO case and that no one would come to secure his release, leading to his extreme step.

A case regarding the incident has been registered at Barke police station.
