New Delhi, Mar 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for shaping his life, instilling a deep sense of national duty, and nurturing a philosophy of selfless service.
In a conversation with AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman, PM Modi spoke about the profound impact of RSS—the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP—on his personal and political journey.
"Through the RSS, I found a life of purpose. Later, I was fortunate to spend time among saints, which gave me a strong spiritual foundation. The discipline and direction I gained through this experience have guided me ever since," PM Modi said.

He highlighted the extensive work carried out by RSS over the past century, particularly in uplifting tribal communities, empowering women, supporting laborers, and mentoring youth. According to him, RSS has always emphasized not just education but also values, ensuring young people develop skills that make them self-reliant and contribute positively to society.
"Be it in the lives of women, youth, or workers, the RSS has always played a constructive role," he added.
Describing the organization’s commitment to selfless service, the Prime Minister noted, "RSS has dedicated itself with the devotion and discipline of a seeker, staying away from the limelight. I feel truly blessed to have gained life's values from such a sacred institution."
During the discussion, Fridman pointed out that PM Modi had joined the RSS at the age of eight, asking how it shaped his identity and political philosophy.
Recalling his early years, PM Modi said, "In our village, there was an RSS shakha (branch) where we played sports and sang patriotic songs.
Something about those songs deeply moved me. They stirred a sense of purpose within, and that’s how I became part of the RSS. One of the key lessons I learned there was—whatever you do, do it with meaning and commitment."
