Tripura, Mar 16: A court in Tripura has sent a youth to judicial custody for the brutal killing of a street dog, an incident that sparked widespread outrage after a video of the act went viral on social media.

The accused, identified as Bador Jamatia from Wak Shimalung Para village in Khowai district, was arrested on Saturday for the crime committed on March 11. He has been booked under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Police presented Jamatia before a court in Khowai on Sunday, where he was granted bail. However, in the absence of a surety, he remains in judicial custody until a bailer comes forward, officials confirmed.

His arrest followed an FIR lodged by Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief and royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. Debbarma took action after coming across a disturbing video on social media, where Jamatia was seen mercilessly beating the dog to death. The video showed the accused repeatedly attacking the animal before hanging it from a tree.

Tripura’s first animal welfare organization, "Pawsome," also filed a separate FIR at Teliamura police station, further amplifying demands for justice. The horrifying visuals led to widespread public outrage, especially among animal rights activists.

Authorities revealed that Jamatia was a repeat offender, allegedly involved in multiple cases of animal cruelty, including the killing of street dogs. Tripura’s Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das strongly condemned the act and directed police to take swift action, leading to the accused’s arrest.

The incident has reignited discussions on animal welfare and stricter laws to prevent such brutal acts of cruelty.
