New Delhi, Mar 17: As Ravindra Jadeja struck 10 runs off the final two balls in the IPL 2023 title clash to crown Chennai Super Kings (CSK) champions for the fifth time, Gujarat Titans’ (GT) pacer Mohit Sharma was left heartbroken. Tasked with defending 13 runs in the last over, Mohit had executed his plan flawlessly for four deliveries before Jadeja turned the tide with a six and a four.
Despite the heartbreak, Mohit holds no regrets. Speaking to reporters at a round-table discussion organized by Delhi Capitals (DC), the 36-year-old reflected on the night in Ahmedabad, saying, “It was difficult because such moments leave a mark. But I believe in destiny. If I had executed two more balls better, things could have been different. But cricket is a team game one person doesn’t win or lose a match.”

The seasoned pacer, who made a fairytale comeback in IPL 2023 by taking 27 wickets, is set to don the DC jersey in IPL 2025. He previously played for them in 2020 but had a forgettable stint. Delhi also holds memories of his toughest IPL outing, conceding 73 runs in four overs against Rishabh Pant's brutal onslaught in April 2024.
With the twilight of his career nearing, Mohit’s focus remains on discipline and preparation. “For me, motivation is not just a word; discipline is everything. Cricket has been my life for 20-22 years, and I will keep playing with the same mindset. Whether as a net bowler or a frontline pacer, my approach remains unchanged.”
Ahead of IPL 2025, Mohit has been working on bowling with both the new and old ball while prioritizing fitness and nutrition. “Strength and conditioning are important, but diet plays an even bigger role. I am consciously avoiding cheat meals and taking care of my body.”
As DC eyes its maiden IPL trophy, Mohit believes the squad looks strong on paper but insists execution will be key. “Every team looks good before the season starts. The real test begins on the field. The first 10 days will be crucial in determining how well we gel as a unit.”
Having played a pivotal role in CSK’s IPL-winning campaigns in 2013 and 2014, which led to his India call-up, Mohit acknowledges how IPL has transformed cricket. “Earlier, international cricket felt distant. Now, thanks to the IPL, players are better prepared for the global stage. The league has evolved immensely.”
With bowlers facing relentless aggression from batters, Mohit emphasizes the importance of execution over ego. “Fast bowlers should not have an ego. In IPL, even a debutant can smash a six off the first ball. It’s all about execution. If you take five wickets, be grateful and move on.”
As he gears up for another IPL season, Mohit Sharma remains steadfast in his approach—focused, disciplined, and ready for whatever comes next.
