Government plans amendment to National Highways Act for returning unused land

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 18: The government is considering amending the National Highways Act to allow the return of acquired land to its original owners if it remains unused for five years, a senior official from the Ministry of Highways revealed on Monday.

Currently, there is no provision in the existing law to denotify land acquired for highway development but left unutilized. The proposed amendment aims to address this gap by introducing a formal mechanism for releasing such land back to its original owners.

“The amendment to the National Highways Act for denotification of unused land will now be presented to the Cabinet and Parliament for approval,” the official stated.

The revision of the law is also expected to streamline land acquisition for highway construction and the development of roadside amenities.

Officials believe this provision will help meet the increasing demands of India’s expanding highway infrastructure while ensuring fair land use policies.
