Nagpur, Mar 17: Nagpur witnessed violent clashes on Sunday evening following protests linked to the demolition of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s grave in Sambhajinagar. A minor dispute between two groups escalated into stone pelting and arson, prompting police intervention with tear gas shells.
The unrest began in the afternoon when several organizations staged a protest outside the District Collector’s office. Though the initial altercation was resolved, tensions reignited in the evening as a large crowd gathered at Shivaji Chowk, chanting slogans. This led to counter-protests from another group, heightening the conflict.
As police attempted to disperse the crowd, some individuals began throwing stones, damaging vehicles and setting a few on fire. Law enforcement officials responded with tear gas and additional security deployment to control the situation.

Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged citizens to cooperate with authorities and not believe in rumors. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also called for calm, emphasizing the need for peace.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the ruling party of fueling the unrest through provocative remarks by certain ministers. He demanded immediate action against those responsible for inciting tensions.
Police investigations are ongoing, with security tightened in sensitive areas to prevent further violence.
