Kundapur, Mar 19: Authorities have imposed fines on three boats for engaging in illegal light fishing in the sea under the jurisdiction of the coastal security police station.

A special operation was carried out at the Gangolli fishing harbour, following which the Udupi district joint director of fisheries was informed to take legal action against the three boats. After an inquiry, the official imposed a total fine of Rs 16,000 on the boat owners.

Additionally, another boat was found equipped with a generator for light fishing during the inspection. The owner was fined Rs 5,000. The generator and lighting equipment used for the prohibited fishing method were removed before the boat was released.

To curb illegal light fishing and bull trawling, a joint flying squad comprising officials from the fisheries department and coastal security police has been formed. The team is conducting continuous inspections at Malpe and Gangolli harbours to enforce regulations.
