New Delhi, Mar 19: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday lauded the government’s successful and peaceful removal of Article 370, describing it as a monumental step towards the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India. He emphasized that this historic achievement was accomplished without the use of force, ensuring the security and well-being of all involved.

Speaking at the Major Bob Khathing Memorial Event in Delhi, Singh also reiterated the government's dedication to administrative reforms based on the principles of "minimum government, maximum governance," and "good governance." He noted that these initiatives have played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the government and the people.

Drawing a parallel between the government's actions in Jammu and Kashmir and Major Bob Khathing’s peaceful integration of Tawang into India, Singh praised Khathing’s contribution to the Northeast, comparing it to the role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the nation’s integration. He commended Khathing as a key figure in shaping the region’s development and strategic significance.

Singh further praised India's foreign policy, highlighting the country’s diplomatic progress under the guidance of leaders like Khathing. He remarked that India now holds a strong global presence, stating, "Today, when we speak, the world listens." He also pointed out that India's position on international forums has strengthened, contrasting it with times when the country was not taken seriously.

The Defence Minister also underlined the importance of national unity in achieving the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047. He highlighted key infrastructure projects in the Northeast, including the Sela Tunnel at 13,000 feet, connecting Tezpur in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, and the Arunachal Frontier Highway, which is expected to serve as both a strategic and economic asset for the region.

Singh credited these developmental initiatives for reducing violence and accelerating progress in the Northeast, citing Assam’s ranking fourth on the New York Times' list of "52 Places to Visit in 2025" as evidence of the region's growing prominence.

Describing Major Khathing as a "great son of India," Singh paid tribute to his legacy of bravery, diplomacy, and dedication to national integration. He urged everyone to adopt the ideals of such exemplary personalities in their own lives.

The event was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Director General of Assam Rifles Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, and Major General BK Sharma (retd), Director General of the United Service Institution of India (USI).
