Kochi, Mar 20: The Kerala High Court has instructed the police to take action against a man accused of defiling a Hindu tradition by allegedly plucking hair from his private parts and placing it in a sacred "Thulasithara," a structure commonly found outside Hindu homes where the basil (tulsi) plant is worshipped.
The case came to light when Sreeraj, arrested for sharing a video on social media, filed for bail. The video, which circulated on Facebook and Instagram, allegedly showed Abdul Hakkim insulting the Thulasithara. A case was registered against Sreeraj for promoting religious enmity by sharing the video, which showed Hakkim—who is believed to be mentally ill—engaging in the controversial act.

However, the Court expressed concern that no action had been taken against Hakkim for his actions. "The Thulasithara is a revered structure in the Hindu community, and Hakkim’s behavior of plucking hair from his private parts and placing it in the Thulasithara clearly offends religious sentiments," the Court observed, pointing out the lack of a case against Hakkim despite the offensive nature of the act.
Sreeraj defended himself by stating that he had merely shared a video already in circulation on social media and highlighted that Hakkim, the person performing the act, had not faced any legal action.
Additionally, the Court raised questions about Hakkim’s mental health, noting that he operates a hotel near the Guruvayoor Temple and holds a valid driving license. "If he is mentally ill, how is he permitted to run a hotel within the premises of the Guruvayoor Temple? Moreover, how is a person with mental health issues allowed to drive?" the Court asked.
The High Court granted bail to Sreeraj, ordering the police to take proper action against Hakkim in accordance with the law.
