Khartoum, Mar 21: In a major development in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, the military has announced the recapture of the Republican Palace in Khartoum, a key stronghold of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). However, the victory remains largely symbolic as the RSF continues to control vast territories, including strategic regions in Darfur.
Videos circulating on social media show military personnel celebrating inside the heavily damaged palace, with soldiers chanting ‘God is the greatest!’ Sudan’s information minister Khaled al-Aiser confirmed the takeover, declaring, “The flag is raised, the palace is back, and the journey to victory continues.”
Despite this gain, the RSF still holds Khartoum International Airport, just 2.5 km from the palace. Meanwhile, the RSF claimed control over al-Maliha, a critical town in North Darfur near the Chad-Libya border, though the Sudanese military has not confirmed losing it.
As the war nears its second year, Sudan faces one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 28,000 deaths and millions displaced. Famine-stricken areas report families resorting to eating grass for survival. Civilian casualties continue to rise as fighting intensifies.
The conflict, rooted in the power struggle between military chief Gen Abdel-Fattah Burhan and RSF leader Gen Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has also reignited ethnic violence in Darfur, drawing accusations of war crimes against both sides.
With no immediate end in sight, Sudan remains mired in devastation, as hopes for peace remain distant.
